Check of a side play of a steering wheel
Establish forward wheels in provision of the rectilinear movement (a steering wheel in average situation), start the engine and make effort of 5 N for a rim of a steering wheel (slightly turn a steering wheel).

Measure a free wheeling (side play) of a steering wheel on its rim (fig. 5.1).
Nominal rate of a free wheeling (side play) of a steering wheel: 0–30 mm.
If the side play of a steering wheel exceeds maximum permissible value, check existence of gaps in connections of a shaft of steering and tips of steering drafts.

Check of angles of rotation of the operated wheels

Install forward wheels on the stand for measurement of radius of turn and measure angles of rotation of the operated wheels (fig. 5.2).
The nominal rate of angles of rotation of the operated wheels is given below.
Internal wheel: 40 °01’ ±2 °.
External wheel: 33 °45’.
If the angle of rotation does not correspond to nominal rate, adjust the lever mechanism.

Check of the moment of the beginning of rotation of spherical hinges of tips of steering drafts

By means of the special tool disconnect the spherical hinge of a tip of steering draft from a rotary fist (fig. 5.3).
Several times move a finger of the spherical hinge for check of lack of an excessive free wheeling.

Screw a nut on a finger of the spherical hinge, then measure the moment of the beginning of rotation of the hinge (fig. 5.4).
Nominal rate: 0,5–2,5 N · m.
If the measured size is more than top limit of nominal rate, replace a tip of steering draft.
If the measured size is less than lower limit of nominal rate, check lack of the raised gaps or jamming in the spherical hinge and if necessary replace.

Check of size of effort at turn of a steering wheel on the motionless car
Arrange the car on the flat horizontal platform and establish the operated wheels in provision of the rectilinear movement.
Increase rotation frequency коленчатго an engine shaft up to 900–1100 min.-1.

NOTE
After check at the set frequency of rotation of a bent shaft of the engine it is necessary to establish normal rate of rotation of idling.

By means of a spring dynamometer measure the effort demanded for turn of a steering wheel from provision of the rectilinear movement to the left and to the right (on 1,5 turns) (fig. 5.5).
Nominal rate of effort at turn of a steering wheel of 29 N.
Be convinced of lack of sudden change of size of effort of turn at rotation of a steering wheel.
If the measured size of effort of turn exceeds a nominal zanacheniye, check whether there are no cracks and damages of protective covers of a spherical support of the lower lever of a suspension bracket and the spherical hinge of a tip of steering draft.
Check a preliminary tightness of the bearing of the leading gear wheel of the steering mechanism and the moment of the beginning of rotation of the spherical hinge of a tip of steering draft.
Check the moment of the beginning of rotation of the spherical hinge.

Check of independent return of a steering wheel to average situation
Make sure that the steering wheel independently comes back to average situation, and the effort necessary for turn and return of a steering wheel to average situation, it is identical in both directions of rotation at smooth and sharp its turns.

At the movement of the car with a speed of 35 km/h turn a steering wheel on 90 ° and hold it 2 св this situation. After release the steering wheel has to return independently to range within ±20 ° from average situation (fig. 5.6).

NOTE
At sharp turn there can be an instant feeling of some "weight" of a steering wheel, however it is not considered malfunction. This feeling arises because of the low productivity of the pump of the hydraulic booster of steering at a small frequency of rotation of a bent shaft of the engine.

Check of a tension of a belt of the drive of the pump of the hydraulic booster of steering

Press on maple a belt of the drive of the pump of the hydraulic booster of steering with effort of 98 N in the point specified in the figure 5.7 and check that the deflection of a belt corresponds to nominal rate.
Belt deflection (nominal rate): 6–9 mm.

If the deflection of a belt does not correspond to nominal rate, then adjust a tension, having weakened a bolt of adjustment of a tension of a belt on the pump of the hydraulic booster of steering (fig. 5.8).
Install the lever opposite to the pump of the hydraulic booster of steering and, moving the pump, adjust a belt deflection so that it corresponded to nominal rate.
Tighten a bolt of adjustment of a tension of a belt on the pump of the hydraulic booster of steering.
Check a deflection of a belt and if necessary repeat the procedure of adjustment.

ATTENTION
Check of a deflection of a belt should be made after a provorachivaniye of a pulley of the pump of the hydraulic booster of steering on one or several turns in the normal direction of rotation.

Check of level of liquid in a tank of a hydraulic system of the amplifier
Install the car on the flat horizontal platform.
Start the engine. On the motionless car make in a row several turns of a steering wheel that temperature of working liquid increased approximately to 50–60 °C.
At the idling engine make several turns of a steering wheel to the right and to the left against the stop.
Check lack of turbidity or foaming of liquid in a tank of a hydraulic system of the amplifier.

Check the size of a difference of levels of liquid in a tank of a hydraulic system of the amplifier at the working and idle engine (fig. 5.9).

NOTE
If the level of liquid changes more than on 5 mm, it is necessary to remove air from a hydraulic system of the amplifier repeatedly. If liquid level sharply increases after an engine stop, air from a hydraulic system means it is removed not completely. During incomplete removal of air from a hydraulic system of the amplifier of steering there are extraneous jingling noises from the pump of the hydraulic booster and the valve of regulation of a consumption of liquid that leads to reduction of service life of the pump and other elements of a hydraulic system.
