1.6.5. Additional system of passive safety (SRS) – inflatable safety cushions

The car is equipped with additional system of passive safety (inflatable safety cushions) of SRS. Existence of this system can be determined by the inscription "SRS AIR BAG" which is available on a safety cushion cover in a steering wheel and on an overlay of the panel from the forward passenger over a ware box.
The additional system of passive safety of SRS of Hyundai consists of the safety cushions installed under slips in the middle of a steering wheel and in the panel from the forward passenger over a ware box. A problem of this system is ensuring additional safety of the driver and/or forward passenger in addition to system of seat belts at frontal blows of average or big force.

Fig. 1.125. Safety cushion of the driver

NOTE
Surely study information on the SRS system on the labels located on a reverse side of a sun-protection peak from the driver and in a ware box.

The SRS system is developed in addition and for work together with three-point seat belts of the driver and forward passenger and is not replacement for them. Therefore, being in the car, be always fastened by seat belts. It is necessary to consider that safety cushions work at rather strong frontal blows and only once. Therefore it is necessary to be fastened by seat belts always.
Safety cushions do not work at weak blows when for protection of passengers of enough fastened seat belts.

Fig. 1.126. An example of emergencies at which safety cushions do not work

Safety cushions are not calculated on operation at back, side blows and at a car turning. Besides, safety cushions will not work at frontal blow at speeds below a certain threshold speed of the car (fig. 1.126).
Do not replace independently disconnected elements of the SRS system and do not allow blows to them: it can lead to injuries.
The driver has to adjust a seat so that to be as it is possible further from a safety cushion, but to have convenient access to all governing bodies of the car. Do not bend and do not sit too close to a safety cushion when the car moves – it can lead to serious injuries at a pillow dehiscence.
Do not put any objects on or about modules of safety cushions – on a steering wheel, the dashboard and the panel before the forward passenger, they can injure at a dehiscence of safety cushions.
If safety cushions worked, they have to be replaced at the service station of the official dealer of Hyundai.
Do not allow blows to wires and components of additional system of passive safety (SRS) – it can lead to unexpected operation of safety cushions or an exit of system out of operation.
Installation of any holding devices for children (child seats) on forward sitting is not allowed. In case of accident disclosure of an inflatable safety cushion of the forward passenger can injure or lead to death sitting in the holding adaptation (child seat) of the child. Do not allow children to be in space before a front seat. If on forward sitting the adult child sits, he owes life is fastened by a seat belt, and the seat has to be removed back as it is possible further.
For ensuring the maximum protection at all types of collisions all passengers, including the driver, have to be always fastened by seat belts irrespective of existence of a safety cushion on this sitting to minimize risk of getting injured or death in case of the road accident (accident).
For ensuring protection at collision filling of safety cushions with SRS gas happens very quickly and to big force. If the passenger do not fasten a seat belt, the safety cushion can strongly hit it that can serve as the reason of serious or even fatal trauma.

Functions and elements of the SRS system
The additional system of passive safety (SRS) includes the following components:
– frontal inflatable safety cushion of the driver assembled;
– frontal inflatable safety cushion of the forward passenger assembled;
– control lamp of the SRS (SRI) system;
– SRS electronic control unit (additional system of passive safety) (SRSCM).

Fig. 1.127. Operation of a safety cushion

SRS electronic control unit (additional system of passive safety) (SRSCM) constantly watches all components of system when the ignition key is in the provision of "ON" ("Incl.") and defines whether rather strong there was a frontal or okolofrontalny blow to open safety cushions (fig. 1.127).
The control lamp of the SRS (SRI) system on the dashboard blinks about 6 sposl of turn of the ignition key in the provision of "ON" (Incl.) or after start of the engine then dies away.
Inflatable safety cushions are located in the middle of a steering wheel and in the panel opposite to a seat of the forward passenger over a ware box. When SRS electronic control unit (additional system of passive safety) determines (SRSCM) frontal blow of sufficient force, it automatically opens safety cushions.

Fig. 1.128. The panel under which the safety cushion of the forward passenger is located

During disclosure the safety cushion extending at inflation by gas beats out a cover which breaks on a special seam (fig. 1.128).
Completely opened safety cushion in a combination with correctly fastened seat belt slows down advance of the driver or forward passenger, thereby reducing risk of traumatizing the head and thorax.

ATTENTION
Do not establish and do not put any foreign objects (a coaster, the holder for cartridges, a sticker, etc.) on the forward panel over a ware (glove) box on the cars equipped with a safety cushion of the forward passenger. At operation of a safety cushion of the forward passenger such objects can be thrown out in interior of the car and put severe injuries.

After full filling by gas the safety cushion at once begins to go down, providing to the driver the forward review.

ATTENTION
At operation of an inflatable safety cushion of SRS sharp loud cotton is heard and a quantity of smoke and dust (powder) is allocated. These phenomena do not constitute danger and are normal. However, the dust (powder) produced when filling pillows by gas can lead to irritation of skin. After operation of inflatable safety cushions surely wash up a face and hands with soap and warm water.

The SRS system works, only when the ignition key is in the provision of "ON" ("Incl."). If the control lamp of SRS does not light up or burns constantly after a blinking approximately during 6 sposl of turn of the ignition key in the provision of "ON" ("Incl."), after start of the engine or lights up during the movement of the car, it indicates malfunction of the SRS system.
Before replacement of a safety lock or a detachment of a wire from the plug of the rechargeable battery turn the ignition key in the provision of "LOCK" ("Blocking") or take out a key from the ignition lock. Never take out the SRS system fuse if the ignition key is in the provision of "ON" ("Incl."), otherwise the control lamp of SRS will light up.

Side safety cushions (additional equipment)

Fig. 1.130. Sensor of blow of side safety cushions

The car can be equipped with side inflatable safety cushions for each front seat. The side safety cushion provides protection of the driver and forward passenger in addition to seat belts. Side safety cushions are calculated only for operation in certain cases at side blows, depending on force and the angle of blow, speed of the car and the place of blow. Side safety cushions are not calculated on operation in all cases of side blows (fig. 1.130).
